While exploring the streets of San Francisco this week, an awesome banjo player showed up and started playing on one side of a two sided art exhibit with a curved, stone backing that acts as an echo chamber that allows you to hear sound better across far distances (think of a stone egg split into two, separated by 30 feet or so, with chairs set in front on both sides).
He started playing and I took out my photon lights and started dancing. Then I sat down and started singing with him. I rapped, sang, and people started coming up and giving him money! Soon, he stopped playing and gave me money for my part in it! He said, “It wouldn’t have been the same without your singing.” I was so touched! I think we all want to be recognized for our talents and gifts – not necessarily by humans, but by God. I feel like we have a lot to learn as a team about appreciating one another’s spiritual gifts. So much of the Christian Science movement focuses so much on just a few people’s spiritual gifts (according to current Church structure). We had a real opportunity to do more to grow the talents and spiritual gifts of our entire movement and this Burning Man ministry is a really important experiment in learning how to do that.
Just then, a group of three young people came over to us and sat down. They were pretty intoxicated, but it didn’t matter! They just wanted to sing with us! So the banjo player started playing again. We needed lyrics, and just then I realized that I had a bunch of print outs from the Bible Lesson Quarterly with the Lord’s Prayer and its Spiritual Interpretation, Scientific Statement of Being, and Correlative passage from I John.
WE ALL SANG IT TOGETHER AND IT WAS AWESOME CHILDLIKENESS!!! LET’S SING!
